Advice Column

I just finished reading a Marketing & Sales advice column and laughed to myself at how vehemently I agreed with some items and disagreed with others. One that I agreed with is the condemnation of the expression, "I am reaching out to you ..." These words ooze nothing more that feigned sincerity. The column noted that this is just another way of saying, "I want to sell you something" or "I want you to do something for me." Those who use them don't care about anything other that getting their own way.

But one piece of advice that I took issue with advocated, "Stop handing out your business card." It said that the business card has become a useless failure; it is dead. The column went on to say that, when you give out your card, you are really asking the recipient to do something with it: they must figure out where to file it or scan it into their electronic address book. In frustration, they just throw it away.

I don't think that clients and customers are that stupid or clueless. Most maintain a card file or a database ... if it's a card file, they can decide if they want to keep your card. If it is a database, they will likely check to see if your information is correct. The business card is a great way to reinforce who you are, who you represent and how to contact you. And I can't tell you how many times I have seen a business card with a note on the back on a clients desk, serving as a reminder. I wouldn't want to miss out on that !!!

A new business was opening and one of the owner”s friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card; it said “Rest in Peace”. The owner was angry and called the florist to complain.

After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. “Sir, I”m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new location!”
