Application: Die Casting Die Casting is the metal forming process in which molten metal is forced into a cavity or mold under high pressure. Hot chamber machines are used primarily for zinc, copper, magnesium, lead and other low melting point alloys. The injection mechanism of a hot chamber machine is immersed in the molten metal bath of a metal holding furnace. The furnace is attached to the machine by a metal feed system called a gooseneck.
As the injection cylinder plunger rises, a port in the injection cylinder opens, allowing molten metal to fill the cylinder. As the plunger moves downward it seals the port and forces molten metal through the gooseneck and nozzle into the die cavity. After the metal has solidified in the die cavity, the plunger is withdrawn, the die opens and the casting is ejected. Cartridge heaters are used to heat the gooseneck and keep the metal in a molten state for injection into the die. Watt-Flex® cartridge heaters are ideal for this aplication. The design of the system generally prevents through holes for the heaters, so the no-bore- seizure characteristic of the split heater is very adventageous.
The picture above shows a typical gooseneck. Three heaters are installed around the nozzle from the back. Since the heaters are exposed to oxides and substantial contamination, it is important to protect them with a header and stainless hose. This is a great application for Watt-Flex cartridge heaters and you !!!
Friday Funnies
A policeman had a perfect hiding place to screen speeding drivers. But one day, everyone was under the speed limit, the officer investigated : a 9 year old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand-painted sign which said "SPEED CAMERA AHEAD." A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy's partner in crime, another boy about 200 meters beyond the speed camera with a sign reading "TIPS" & a bucket at his feet full of coins.
